One-to-One Therapeutic Mentoring

Supporting children and young people to feel safe, grow and thrive.

Krunch West Midlands provides one-to-one therapeutic mentoring to support children and young people across Sandwell, Dudley and Birmingham. With over 26 years of experience delivering emotional health and wellbeing interventions, the team is committed to helping every young person build confidence, strengthen their emotional resilience and develop the life skills they need to reach their full potential.

Whether sessions take place in a school, college, the Krunch centre in Oldbury, or another suitable local venue, the focus is always the same: to create a safe, trusted space where young people feel heard, understood and supported.

What mentoring sessions involve.

Each session is tailored to the individual needs of the young person. Krunch mentors support young people to:

  • Build a safe, positive and trusting relationship within a confidential and supportive environment.
  • Explore how life is going and develop awareness of thoughts, emotions and feelings.
  • Work through stresses, worries or barriers to learning and wellbeing.
  • Understand and manage big emotions that may cause difficulties at school, home or with others.
  • Engage in practical games, activities, crafts, personal interests and themed discussions that make learning accessible and enjoyable.
  • Learn self-help strategies such as calming techniques, journaling and healthy daily routines.
  • Reflect on choices, consequences and personal responsibility in a supportive, non-judgemental way.
  • Explore personal safety and respectful interactions, both online and in the community.
  • Set achievable short- and long-term goals to build motivation and confidence.
  • Access signposting to positive local activities and opportunities.

Sessions are always adapted to suit the young person’s abilities, needs and learning style so that they feel safe, valued and comfortable throughout.

What young people can expect.

We place great importance on listening. Young people’s thoughts, feelings and opinions are central to their progress, and mentors ensure there is always time and space for them to express themselves.

All mentoring is delivered using a trauma-informed approach, with wellbeing and safety at the centre. Mentors offer empathy and encouragement while also providing gentle challenge to help young people reflect on their actions, choices and personal responsibility.

Simple guidelines are agreed at the start to help young people get the most from their sessions. All content and activities are adapted to suit the individual’s unique needs. At the end of the mentoring programme, we provide a final report outlining engagement, progress, outcomes and any recommended next steps.

Safeguarding and quality assurance - Safety, comfort and wellbeing are always top priorities.

All Krunch mentors:

  • Hold enhanced DBS checks.
  • Receive regular safeguarding and specialist training.
  • Work within trauma-informed practice.
  • Follow our clear organisational policies, including safeguarding, health and safety, and behaviour and wellbeing.
  • Are supported by an experienced leadership team and regular supervision.

Head of Youth Justice and Interventions

I have worked with Krunch for many years in my role in the police. Their consistency has always been to a very high standard, even though we all have faced financial challenges and cut backs.

They have always had the ‘let’s see how we can help’ attitude which has always put their organisation at the forefront of any issues, concerns or projects we have in mind.

I am very grateful for my mentor as they helped me realise a lot of things about myself and the people around me. I really valued their advice as I could tell they were a genuine person and would not judge me based on what I shared.
